Simon Marketing Association (SMA) – a student-run organization, was in New York City visiting companies that practice excellent marketing. The three-day tour was hosted by companies including Forest Labs, Bayer, Unilever and Colgate-Palmolive, among others.
SMA members had an opportunity to visit these companies and gain real perspective about their work culture. At Unilever and Bayer, where there is a strong Simon alumni presence, students could network and learn about internship opportunities in brand management. Bayer Healthcare division set up a panel of managers representing brands such as Aleve®, One-A-Day® and Bayer Aspirin®. The brand managers talked about their work-life balance, teamwork and corporate culture at Bayer. The informal discussion about day-to-day activities and challenges facing these brands was insightful and interesting. “Simon students were very lively and engaged, which makes it more fun!” said Marc Stephens, associate brand manager for Aleve.
Scott Sweeney MBA ’08 welcomed the Simon students with a corporate presentation and tour of the facilities including the taste kitchen at Unilever – where new products are created and tested by culinary artists. Scott, who manages the Lipton® brand, then graciously hosted a happy hour and shared many of his personal experiences both as intern and then as a brand manager at Unilever. SMA organized the whole event, including transportation, hotels and company visits.
